Reclaim Your Bandwidth: How Grass Lets You Safely Share Your Internet Bandwidth

For over a decade, large corporations have been silently using people’s internet bandwidth without their knowledge through apps, screensavers, and other software on their devices. In other words, your bandwidth has been exploited and you’ve received nothing in return!
We’re changing all that at Grass by giving you a way to turn a resource you didn’t realize you had into one that can earn you rewards. Sharing your bandwidth Grass ensures it isn’t exploited, but rewarded!
We get it. It’s hard to believe you can earn rewards for anything these days without handing over all your personal information. But you’ll never have to tell us your mother’s maiden name or give us access to all your contacts to use Grass.
Grass security and privacy aren’t afterthoughts. They’re the foundational elements of our network.
The Hidden Value of Your Unused Internet Bandwidth
When you sign up with an internet service provider, you’re purchasing an internet plan with a specific amount of bandwidth. For example, an average connection will give you around 100 megabits per second, or Mbps. When you’re skimming news articles, checking email, or browsing social media, you might be using just 5-10 Mbps, leaving 90% of your available bandwidth on the table.
(Having trouble following all the tech jargon? Our Grass Glossary will get you up to speed.)
This is where Grass really shines. Instead of letting your unused bandwidth go to waste, Grass lets you share it with verified institutions that use it to collect public information from the web. These institutions may use your bandwidth for things like checking how certain websites appear in different regions. Of course, we don’t expect you to just give away your bandwidth. Grass rewards users with Grass Points, which you can turn into Grass Tokens.
Best of all, we never see your private data.
Grass’s Commitment to Privacy and Cybersecurity
In order to build and maintain trust within our community, we want to make sure all our users understand the steps we take to operate transparently and protect your information. After all, when any service offers rewards, there’s usually a hidden catch.
That’s why we’ve built privacy and security into the heart of our network architecture. Working with industry leaders like Avast, Microsoft Defender, McAfee, and AVG, we’ve designed our systems from the ground up with user protection in mind.
Privacy
Privacy at Grass starts with requesting only the personal information necessary to operate our network, products, and services. We only ask for your:
- Username
- Password*
- IP address
We also provide you with a referral code that you can use to invite new users to join the Grass network.
All of your information is securely stored, and we’ll never sell your personal information. (Check out our Privacy Policy for more details.)
Our focus on data privacy sharply contrasts with most other types of extensions and applications. The chart below says it all.

In addition, we can’t and won’t use your browsing history. The only non-personal information that we collect is:
- Your operating system type
- Application IDs
- The type and version of your browser
- Crash data and analytics.
This info is only used to support your participation in the Grass network.
Like most websites, we use optional Google Analytics and Microsoft Clarity Cookies on GetGrass.io to help us improve the website, but you’re free to turn these off in the Cookie Settings on our website. The only cookie you are not permitted to turn off is the Essential Grass Cookie used to authenticate requests on the Grass dashboard, allowing the display of personalized rewards. (To learn more about the cookies that we use on GetGrass.io, see our Cookie Policy.)
Security
Grass security and privacy go hand-in-hand. Internally, we use bandwidth encryption to ensure you’re fully protected while sharing your internet connection. We also work with AppEsteem, a leading cybersecurity compliance auditor, who monitors our products 24/7, 365 days per year for vulnerabilities, leaks, backdoors, and malware. We’ve even successfully integrated with AppEsteem and achieved the highly regarded AppEsteem certification that showcases our commitment to security.
We also make every effort to stay up to date on the latest developments in cybersecurity and are at the forefront of helping advance anti-malware solutions. We are a proud contributor to the AMTSO, which is doing incredible work in bringing together leading cybersecurity industry experts, including CSA and Nord Security, to share knowledge and collaborate on issues that will make the digital world a safer place.
How Grass Ensures the Safety of Your Data
When you run a Grass node, we’ll use a small amount of your unused bandwidth to gather public web data. Here’s what’s crucial to understand: Grass internet traffic is completely separate from your personal browsing history.
Think of Grass like a friend using your Wi-Fi on their own device. They’re connected to your internet, but they can’t see anything you’re doing on yours. In the same way, Grass uses your extra bandwidth, but has no visibility into your private activity.
We can’t view what’s happening in your browser or other applications. We can’t access your extensions, pop-ups, passwords, or any personal information you enter while using your connection. We have absolutely no ability to see your data even if we wanted to (which we don’t!).

FAQs
How does Grass ensure its participants are rewarded fairly for their contributions?
You’ll receive Grass Tokens based on a number of factors, including how your Grass bandwidth is used and your location. We use a reputation scoring system to evaluate the completeness, consistency, timeliness, and availability of the data you help provide. You can always track your Grass Points (which lead to opportunities for Grass Tokens) on your dashboard.
Will Grass slow my internet connection down?
No. Grass only uses small amounts of your unused bandwidth. The app always takes a backseat to your own internet usage. If you’re using all your bandwidth yourself, the app simply goes dormant. We’ve designed Grass bandwidth sharing to be unnoticeable, so you should never experience any slowdown in your connection while using our app.
